I just need help getting to the answer. I don't even know why it was factored to fractions.

Regrets for any difficulties.  I would first always recommend that a solution is first set up with 'a few steps' rather than 'a lot of steps', as the additional steps can be requested if the additional steps are actually helpful. 

Your polynomial expression is factored by creating two new terms in order to contain a common factor.  Clicking on a particular solution step provides the logic.
