Ok so this is still confusing

Too many steps can lead to confusion, hence I always start with 'a few steps' and only increase the number of steps as the additional information is helpful. 

The appended images first show the simpler answer and also provide the logic for a given step by clicking on it.  Notice in the first step that all the negative exponents are converted to positive exponents (such as "x^(-1)" can be expressed as "1/x").  In the third step, clicking on it emphasizes that addition of two fractions is a process of "least common denominator".
