The solution ends 16tsquared + t - 12 over 4t

Trying to figure out why the 16 is not reduce to 4 and t squared not reduce to t leaving only t-12. is there a way to identify when you have finished the problem so you don't keep trying to go on with the problem when it's finished.

Answer provided by our tutors

Yea, the best way to approach a simplification is to begin with "a few steps" (click the 'Options' tab to adjust the number of solution steps).  That particular expression has only the variable 's' in common with the denominator and numerator, hence cancelling 's' is the only reasonable simplification.

Note also in the second image that "long division" is utilized in Algebrator's desktop software.  The final division results in "4t + 1/4" with a remainder of "(-12)/(4t)".
