In order to solve this linear inequality, we need to group all the variable terms on one side, and all the constant terms on the other side of the inequality.

a - 17 > - 6

The inequality will not change if we add "17" to both sides of the inequality:

a - 17 + 17 > - 6 + 17

a > 11

So, the solution is the open interval (11, ~).
