Can you further explain what was done? It seems like only the numerator was multiplied by -1, making the denominator cancelled out, but then wouldn't the denominator also have to be inverted?? Thank you.

The numerator is multiplied by (-1)(-1) = 1, that is:
So, that is how you get final result -(y + x)
