Example

Graphing a linear equation

Graph y = 2x + 1. Plot at least four points.

Solution

If we write y in terms of x, we get y = -2x + 1. Now arbitrarily select four values for x and calculate the corresponding values for y:

x -1 0 1 2
y = -2x + 1 3 1 -1 -3

Plot these points and draw a line through them as shown in the figure below.
